| MAINSTAGE SERIES CONCERT 3 |
| |
| KPLU Listener Request Show |
|
Featuring eight pieces selected entirely by the listening audience of KPLU-FM88.5
Saturday, June 14, 2008 7:30 PM
Nordstrom Recital Hall/Benaroya Hall
Sunday, June 15, 2008 3:00 PM
Kirkland Performance Center
The SRJO presents a weekend of special concerts featuring big band jazz works selected in a
popular vote by the listening audience of KPLU FM 88.5 radio. In the tradition of its highly popular
"Jazz DJs' Top Choices" concerts, the SRJO asked KPLU-FM radio listeners to vote for their favorite
big band pieces from the entire 100-year history of jazz. If the sheet music is unavailable
for a winning piece, SRJO co-director Michael Brockman has pledged to transcribe the score,
note-for-note, from a vintage recording.
Voting commenced in November, and for several
months KPLU listeners have indicated their choices for favorite big band pieces either online or by writing to
the SRJO offices. Eight winning selections will be featured in the concert, including two epic pieces,
"Diminuendo and Crescendo in Blue" by Duke Ellington and "Sing, Sing, Sing" by Benny Goodman, plus
"Jeanine" by Duke Pearson (a perennial favorite of KPLU radio host Dick Stein), and
Latin bandmaster Tito Puente's "Oye Coma Va."
An added feature to the concert will be the presentation of special guest soloists from award-winning high school jazz programs in the Seattle area.
